Health Insurance Marketplace Navigator

Certified Marketplace Navigator and the Affordable Care Act

A Certified Marketplace Navigator offers unbiased guidance to individuals and businesses who want to purchase private health insurance through the Marketplace at www.HealthCare.gov.  Navigators help consumers understand their options under the affordable care act.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, are referred to collectively as the “Affordable Care Act.” Navigators and the Federally‐facilitated Health Insurance Marketplace are part of the Affordable Care Act.

Individuals and Families

The Affordable Care act mandates US citizens must be responsible for having qualifying health insurance. Government qualifying health insurance includes: job based health insurance, insurance purchased through the market place,  health insurance purchased outside the marketplace through an agent or broker, or if you are covered  by a state or federal health insurance such as Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance Programs, Tricare,  or Medicare.

The main advantage of getting health insurance through the marketplace is if you qualify for an advance premium tax credit, it can be used to lower your monthly health insurance premiums.

Small Business Health Options Program

The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) Marketplace helps small businesses provide health coverage to their employees.

The SHOP Marketplace is open to employers with 50 or fewer full-time equivalent employees (FTEs), including non-profit organizations. You can enroll in SHOP at any point throughout the year.

If you enroll in SHOP coverage and have fewer than 25 employees, you may qualify for a Small Business Health Care Tax Credit worth up to 50% of your premium costs. The tax credit is available only for plans bought through the SHOP Marketplace.

Outreach and Education

Navigator offer basic health insurance education to the public through classes, information tables, and speaking events. If you have questions or you would like to schedule a speaking event, please contact Lisa Hart.

All Navigator services are free and open to the public.

If you need assistance in enrolling in the health insurance marketplace, you may contact our Marketplace Navigator.
